Being in Year 6 at Holy Cross is a truly memorable time for the children.
This is a key moment in their lives; they will develop more independence, a huge amount of resilience and, most importantly, they will become very aware of who they are as both learners and young adults.
Our Year 6 children are considered to be the role models of our School and have the responsibility of showing their young peers what to do through our buddy system with Reception class. Throughout the year, three head boys and three head girls, one of each for every term, are elected by the members of staff to also represent our school in the best way possible.
During the year, our children in Year 6 will be challenged in class and we will have high expectations for all the children to achieve their very best, in their work and also for their future. We want our children to work hard and to be confident enough to make mistakes and learn from them. During the year there is plenty of fun through our trips, activities and our creative curriculum!
Of course, a big part of our summer term in Year 6 is preparing for the move to secondary school – a huge milestone in the lives of our children. This may involve going to their new schools or having a visit from some of their new teachers, which will hopefully help with any concerns or questions they may have.
Children will take part in an end of year production, celebrations of their successes and a very special Mass as they complete their years at Holy Cross School.
Year 6 children always have lots of fun in their last year with us and we always remind them that they will always be part of our Holy Cross family!

Curriculum Intent
Holy Cross Catholic Primary School is a unique and special place where our faith is at the heart of all we do. Our children learn to live the Gospel values of love, forgiveness and peace. Within our federation of Aspire London we use the National Curriculum and believe that our children deserve for it to be tailored to their needs. With this in mind we have prioritised the things we want our children to enjoy, experience and remember during their time with us.
Our curriculum at Aspire London has a set of ‘drivers’ developed from the deep knowledge of the pupils and their families within our School community.
The drivers which shape our curriculum ensure we give our pupils aspirational opportunities throughout their primary school years. We provide our children with the wealth of knowledge required to be informed and thoughtful members of our community and wider world. The breadth of our curriculum encourages pupils to be ambitious, develop an inquiring mind and a life-long love of learning.

Summer Term
| English ‘The Diary of an Edo Princess’ will be our main text this term, children will write for many purposes and audiences. They will clarify and improve their thinking and ideas through recordings and research. Children will be encouraged to organise and structure their writing in various ways. They will be given plenty of opportunity to plan, draft and evaluate their work, using a wider range of punctuation and experiment with different vocabulary relating to our topic. Children will understand the power of imagery and other literary devices to engage the reader. The Rabbits’ will be our second text which will enable children to explore a powerful visual narrative and analyse different perspectives of the same event. | |
Maths Children will learn the order of operations to carry out calculations (BODMAS) and be able to recall equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages. We will learn how to express missing number problems algebraically recognise when it is possible to use the formulae for area and volume of shapes. We will draw and translate simple shapes on the coordinate plane and reflect them in the axes. We will solve problems calculate and interpreting the mean as an average. | |
RE Children will learn about early Christians, knowing about the teachings of the Apostles and the impact of those on us today. We will then look at the church as a family and developing a greater understanding of what this means for us and how we can spread the ‘good news’ of the Church. | |
Science This term we will begin by naming and understanding the functions of the main body parts and the circulatory system. Recognising the impact of diet and exercise on the way our body functions. Children will take measurements using a range of scientific equipment with accuracy and precision, repeating when necessary. | |
History/Geography Children will gain an understanding of how Benin Kingdom was formed and developed. To learn about the five warrior kings and give an explanation of how and why the kingdom became powerful. Question why the British Empire attacked Benin devising valid historical questions and acknowledging the impact this would have had on this nation. | |
Computing We will learn how to create a quiz for young children using 2Quiz and what the terms binary and denary man. Children will enhance their knowledge of spreadsheets looking at basic formulae and creating a variety of graphs. | |
PE Gymnastics: To know how to develop strength, technique and flexibility throughout performances. Dance: Thoroughly evaluate their own and others’ work making suggestions of thoughtful and appropriate improvements Athletics: Practice and refine an effective sprinting technique, develop their standing vertical jump, perform throws with increased distance and with greater accuracy. | |
Art We will study African Masks, key features and materials used and will produce a 3D mask. They will learn about the various techniques of tie-dying and create a head-scarf using this process. | |
DT Children will research popular biscuits. They will understand that food is processed into ingredients that can be eaten or used in cooking. They will be able to explain that foods contain different substances, such as protein, that are needed for health and be able to apply these principles when planning, preparing and evaluating their dishes. | |
Music Children will compose melodies in minor keys using simple harmonies. We will explore African Music and Rhythms and know more about syncopated rhythms. | |
PSHE/RSE Children will learn about self-respect and about their rights and responsibilities. We will develop their9 respect for diversity and equality. Find out about managing money effectively including the concepts of spending and saving. |
